Cavitating Chlorine and Corrosion Problems

Date: 2019
Location: China
Customer: ******

Process / Problem:

In the Caustic Soda unit the existing chlorine pump control valve was unable to control pressure accurately via the actuator. In addition, chlorine leaks had been recorded from the packing and the stem had suffered from severe corrosion, causing a danger to plant operators.

Solution:

The existing chlorine control valve was replaced by a Hunt & Mitton Series 5801 control valve with an anti-cavitation two stage trim designed for this application. The materials have been selected to ensure material compatibility with the fluid and the new trim has eliminated the cavitation giving close control of the liquid chlorine.

Benefit:

Chlorine is no longer leaking from the packing causing a danger to operators and damage to the environment. The downstream pressure is now stable and controlled accurately allowing for better processing conditions.

Hunt and Mitton:

Hunt & Mitton has a long history of producing valves for hazardous chemicals dating back to the 1950s. We believe that better design, material choices and attention to detail in manufacture, equates to a lower cost of ownership for our customers.
